Few things are more universal than a person’s need to belong, to have somewhere to call their own. Slice of Home explores the idea of belonging through the creation of a communal living space—not for the artists themselves, but for their work. Living vicariously through their art allows the artists to form a family lacking any blood relations but still a whole cohesive unit. And by basing each display room on common household locations, the works are given a more comfortable feeling, compared to the blank, sterile white of a normal gallery space.
The relationship between artwork and placement is almost as important as the relationship between the artists themselves. Each location within the house was selected by considering what the artist thought of when they thought of home, and how those memories related to their current work. An open kitchen window on a summer afternoon, the first use of a power-drill, or stargazing on a clear night—these small moments are what stick out in childhood memories and serve as a foundation to develop what the idea of a home should be.
From metalsmithing to photography, painting to fabrication, every artist approaches the task of creation from a different direction. And it is because of these differences, rather than in spite of them, that the artists work well together. Each fills a niche that the others lack. This creates an ecosystem of independent cooperation, allowing for individuality while simultaneously working towards the benefit of the group
